I don't think you want to use the overlay keywords as you are doing.
You are telling the compile that $SearchStrg overlays the array.

Try this:

d SearchArr ds Dim(5000) qualified
d $SearchStrg 16a
d $cust_id 9b 0

and the compiler tells me "$SearchStrg is not an array"
