As I understand it, you'd use the LF solely for its layout (via the external data structure). If so, I don't see that worth the cost. I do like the idea of the getters/setters using data structures. I'd use an external data structure for the current layout (PF or LF, whatever) and just manually define the obsolete getter/setter data structures.

I see what you mean. If a LF only includes a subset of columns, you'd only have to make a change if a referenced column was changed. I've never seen that in practice. I'm used to dumping everything (including the kitchen sink) that might possibly go together into the same PF, and the LF's to use the same record format with just a different key.
