could handle all the I/O using SQL since most programs will have
specific WHERE's and/or JOIN's.
We have a rule in place that programs are not allowed to specify
on the fly JOINs. In fact, the MVC controller for the application is not
allowed to issue SQL statements at all. We build SQL views, instead, and
for two reasons. One is so that RPG can generate a joined data structure
and the other is so that we can encapsulate the I/O external to the MVC
controller for the application. As for the WHERE clause, this is not a
problem either as our MVC service layer uses dynamic SQL and intelligently
builds the WHERE clause based on which column values are passed in the
data structure for the view/table.
