You can still use the format text I posted earlier to get auto-red text in
HSSF. You'll be missing the bold.

I format the text in Excel with negative red, and then copy-paste the
special format text into my program, so that I don't have to know how it
all works.

I guess it's a good thing I was using HSSF. After Buck mentioned the XSSF
version I tried to find them in the java classes and could not. It all
makes sense now.

I should also remember to say HSSF or XSSF when I ask for help.

Sorry - that was me. I had XSSF on the brain. HSSF were introduced well
before 3.6. It's the XSSF that were introduced in 3.8. I'm in the process
of cataloging all of the reporting we do for clients and part of that was
looking at converting the existing .xls spreadsheets we create to .xlsx

Yes, that is what I'm trying to use. My samples were all still HSSF not
XSSF, but the same idea. Why can't users just like reports?

Someone else posted about version 3.6 version 3.8. We have 3.6 on the
system to match Scott's wrapper. And it does have the conditional
formatting classes under the org.apache.poi.hssf.usermodel class.

No, I haven't needed that yet.

I have a sheet with calculations. If the value is negative make it red
and bold. Sounds easy I thought.

Well, it's easy if you cheat. Instead of writing a conditional formatting
rule, I actually format each of the cells. Doesn't much help the user with
'what-if' scenarios, but it works for the snapshot sort of things we've
been doing to date.

For those following along, I think we're talking about
XSSFConditionalFormatting and XSSFConditionalFormattingRule
