Yes, and it works. It is also not a perversion of the original
design of %xlate. Rather, it is looking at %xlate from a different angle.
The only difference is that the input string is actually the template of
the output format you desire. Then, the input format provides just the
character content of the template format. Finally, the replacement
characters are the data that you wish to insert into the template. Voila!
