Let’s just agree to disagree on that Dave.

It is not what Xlate was intended to do and anyone new to the language would probably head to the manual when trying to make changes to it. They would then be as confused as most of us were because the parameters would appear to have been specified in error.

Yes, and it works. It is also not a perversion of the original
design of %xlate. Rather, it is looking at %xlate from a different angle.
The only difference is that the input string is actually the template of
the output format you desire. Then, the input format provides just the
character content of the template format. Finally, the replacement
characters are the data that you wish to insert into the template. Voila!
