It may be worth mentioning that Git is technically not the kind of
comparison utility that OP asks for, per se.

Quite right, but without Git I would have one heck of a time storing
the various 'prior' versions to compare against.

Well, sure, that *is* a core feature of version control software after
all, of which Git is probably the leading example today.

But if the OP was talking about using CMPPFM as his current workflow,
then surely he is already keeping around multiple "explicit" copies to
compare. It might be more trouble to shoehorn Git into that workflow
than a standalone diff tool, especially since there is a fair amount
to learn about Git if you've never used it before; whereas I think
folks who can figure out CMPPFM can figure out a diff tool pretty
quickly, in most cases without even reading any instructions.

Anyway, I don't mean to be overly negative on Git. I think it's worth
learning and using. And it may well be the answer OP was looking for
but didn't know to ask for. It just felt *to me* like a weird answer
to the question "what source compare utility do you recommend?".

It seems to me that any IBM i-aware CMS will do what OP wants; the
assumption is that OP can't write that check.

He actually mentioned that his management might prefer a paid tool
over a free one. But yeah, there is certainly a difference in price
between a commercial diff tool and a commercial CMS, and the latter
may be too steep for some shops.
