So that means use a logical with the keys you need.

If you use a logical of that physical than you are still technically using the physical. As in its data.

You are the programmer. Make the decision on the best way to access the data from the physical file.

If the boss denies you to use the correct logical. Then document it in your notes, in writing, emails. Whatever you need to cover your rear when the time comes and the boss questions why the program runs long.
