We're more than safe replacing... I'm not familiar with sed... what is
that?

I've asked the guys at the other end to encode all single quotes as '.

In the meantime I'm messing around with ucs2 data.

I'm not sure if this is a case where I'll need to talk to the trading

replace it and continue on?

Depends on how critical the difference in meaning is between the two
types of quotes. In some contexts, it's significant enough that you
really have to get it right, and you have to preserve every character
as-is.

But in the vast majority of cases, I believe "smart" quotes can be
safely replaced by straight quotes. For these cases, I would just do a
global search-and-replace in the raw data as a preprocessing step.
(Using sed may well be the simplest way to accomplish this.)
