@performance and setup:

depending on your needs, Excel over JDBC (SQLSHEET), running on ArdGate might be an option. Just throw your needed components in the lib directory of ArdGate and it will work.

@Garbage collection: automatic garbage collection (of any language) only works, if there are no references to the objects, the garbage collector should free - this is not working without any support of the programmer - you would have to free your references.

@performance: maybe somebody (maybe me?!) Could write a port of the HSSFR4 stuff from jni to AppServer4RPG and the cow will learn to fly.
