@Jon: year 9999 is working since 1871 or so (using datefmt *ISO):
select date('9999-12-31') from sysibm.sysdummy1

@ null values are very usefull using referential constraints: you could have a constraint, that every order has to have a custumor number, but allowing null for the foreign key, you could have an order without a custumor.
