Since I've got the stored procedure set up and working, I was hoping to meet this new objective without a complete change in method.

I'm now starting to consider a webservice. I think I could get this done as a RESTful webservice using CGIDEV2 with RPGLE.

Not sure if you've decided on SQL as the only possible choice here,
but... if you're open to other alternatives, maybe consider web services?

The HTTP protocol used in web services should be able to handle this.
(Though, I suppose you might have to do a bit more coding than expected if the current crop of tooling can't do the work for you.)
