Henrik

I did notice that IceBreak do say in their readme file, that they do have both native RPG stuff and some other, so I guess that lines up with what you said.

I do see that Sublime is well-thought of - I'm looking at NP++ only because it will be on the laptops used in the labs at COMMON.

I'll look at Sublime sometime - meanwhile, I'll keep using TextPad that I bought years ago!!!

Cheers
Vern

Vernon,

I think that System & Method/Icebreak had a NP++ plugin that goes back to
2008, their newest
is a plugin for Sublime Text that is a very nice editor.

But here we should remember that many IceBreak source files reside in the
IFS and is JIT compiled
into temporary source files that automatically breaks long statements into
narrow RPGLE code.

So it is a little bit different.

Joking or not, I did find a syntax file for Notepd++ - someone here
mentioned one from Icebreak - and it works nicely in the current version of
NP++.

It will have to be updated for fully-free RPG, I suspect - I didn't look
at the details of the XML file that has the specifications.

And Rory mentioined he has a syntax file for TextPad!

Vern,

I was just kidding. Years ago I tried to add syntax highlightning for
RPG. But I have not been very sussesful. But I assume, that Notepad++ did
not use the current UDL 2.0 styler. Maybe that it would work better today,
because the way keywords are detected has been changed with UDL 2.0.

Thomas.

I've looked at Notepad++ for a specific purpose - is the RPG syntax stuff
available on their site?

Buck,

Did you already consider to use Notepad++? It is free and you can add
your own syntax highlightning for RPG!

What might 'best' mean for you? You specifically mention RPG/400 - that
is old, old, old, so I am guessing that 'free' ranks quite highly as far as
'best' goes.

When I used to maintain RPG/400 code (because ILE RPG wasn't invented
yet!) I used and loved Code/400. Your company probably has a copy of
Websphere Development Studio Client 6 or 7. Code/400 is on those CDs.

Today, if I have to work on old RPG source, I convert that source to
ILE RPG format. I like and use Rational Developer for i

Have you any idea about rpgnextgen?
It hasn't been updated in a while but it's still worlds better than
Notepad.
