Did you look at the compiler listing and see what type it thinks OrderNo
is?

Just an aside. Always explicitly declare fields and let the compiler
figure out where to put the next field.

Doing something implicit may work but it might not. For yourself and the
next guy.

d ds
d PoNumber...
d 9s 0
d PoPart1...
d 6s 0 Overlay(PoNumber)
d PoPart2...
d 3s 0 Overlay(PoNumber:*Next)

d OrderNumber...
d s 9p 0 Inz(123456789)
/Free

PoNumber = OrderNumber;

For the life of me, I cannot figure out what the issue is here; after
consulting with my mentor (who shall remain nameless), it was suggested to
post on here for some assistance.

I have an SQL table defined with one field PONUMBER as a 9,0 numeric.

One data structure defined as follows:

0004.21 D ds
0004.22 D PoDs 9 0
0004.23 D PoDat 6 0 Overlay(PoDs)
0004.24 D PoCt 3 0 Overlay(PoDs:7)
0004.27

The DS for the file read:

0004.12 D OrderNo ds LikeRec(RcdPoNo:*Input)

The following line seems simple enough, both fields are defined as a 9,0
but its throwing a 7416 error:

0004.33 PoDs = OrderNo;

I'm hoping someone far smarter than I can point out where my feeble brain
is going haywire.
