Thanks for taking the time to respond. It was definitely illuminating
and appreciated.

Really it's IBM's particular implementation of the language
that I like. C++ on Unix or Windows doesn't excite me
nearly as much.

Before your response, I really didn't know to what degree IBM had
provided i-specific features to C and C++. Now I have a better idea,
and I agree that this gives C++ some extra points as a destination
language on the i if, for some unfathomable reason, RPG becomes
unavailable.
