If I read a cell that contains a formula I skip it and move on.
All the files I read I know the formatting so it is not an issue.
I was just pointing out that when a cell contains a formula that you get the formula, not the result of the formula.

I'm curious: Do you ever "interpret" a cell, or always avoid reading a cell with any kind of "formula".

Hi Alan,

We use Scotts code (Modified) every day to read/update/create excels.
The thing with reading cells is that it is the actual contents of the cell.
When you use Excel it interprets the cells and displays the results.
So, if the cells contain the results of a macro that works ok, as long as the cell itself does not contain the formula.

I have several code examples I could send you if you like.

Jerry

I've been tasked with a project that starts with reading data from an Excel file. The file is very complex, includes a Pivot table, and quite a number of multiple sheets. The accountant creates it with a lot of macros. I've not programmed with Excel files yet, or even Java, except to create comma-delimited files.

Do the POI-HSSF classes in our Java handle things like the Pivot table, or will I need to implement them separately? I've downloaded Scott Klement's RPG source and I'm reading up on his excellent articles on the subject, but it will take a bit to get that far.
