I think your solution is about as elegant and suitable to Michael's post
as possible.
On the other hand, Dieter raises an excellent point, highlighting the
ambiguity of the post, which was confusing because Michael requested
setting "an RPG program variable" while providing query results having
multiple rows/values without further qualification.
Getting a result is one thing, getting a correct, reliable result over time
is another.
Michael could help others help him by including more detail about the
data and why a single value is required.
