My apologies if it seemed as if I was dissing the redbook. You're right in
stating that it is a good guide for converting to RPG IV, and it should be
an important step for someone who comes from the RPG400 world.

That said, something I forgot to state is that a good educational resource
would be the several seminars that are offered either online and/or in
person. Sometimes a book is not enough.

We did try - the result in the end were the two redpieces on APIs and
Error Handling. There just isn't the funding for Redbooks in general that
there once was. As Brian said there is new Modernization one on the way -
but it doesn't have the same in-depth teaching approach that the Sorcerer's
guide and redpieces did.

It would be nice to update the original - but I don't see it happening. It
was a massive undertaking - probably 2 man years at least and that's not
counting the time spent by IBM's editors.

Scott Klement has a nice intro to ILE in his website ( http://www.
scottklement.com ). It's a little bit dated, so if you check IBM's
Infocenter you can download the RPGLE reference manuals and check any
enhancements for the OS version you are running currently. Also, get a

of the ILE RPG Programmer's Guide (Infocenter).

If you haven't done so already, I would strongly suggest you learn
SQLboth, as standalone apps (Procedures, functions, etc) and as
related to
RPG ("Embedded SQL"). Go the /free route (forget all that columnar
