I tried DS array syntax as a "test"
My next step is to process one-many
"identifiers" related to the transaction
returned by the SELECT INTO, so I will
use an EXTNAME DS array for that.

The problem is neither the size of the array data structure nor the data structure definition itself.
SELECT INTO only allows a single row to be received.
If you want to do a multiple row fetch, you need to DECLARE a cursor.

I have a source coded for the scenario described in the following thread [continued to the next month] that uses EXTNAME to define a DS, but then uses a DIM() along with a LIKEDS() naming the DS defined with the EXTNAME().
No issues for -312. I did not review the thread to see if anything like I coded was posted:
