Shareen,

As others pointed out: the limitation is in the 5250 screen handling, not in RPG.

My company is definitely 'in the RPG world’ and we do display windows triggered by keyboard or mouse events. But the event handling is done in the browser, with javascript. When a window is needed, it is displayed by javascript; if necessary, a call is made to an RPG program on the server to supply the information needed.

So you can tell the process engineering department that RPG can do it, if the user interface can do it. 5250 cannot.

Mark,

Our process engineering department wanted to know whether it is possible to do or not in RPG. Our practice is to press F4 key to display a window. I was just checking if anybody in the RPG world is doing this kind of stuff in their shop. Thanks for your and others input.

Shaleen:

Even if you could do that, why would you want to? That would be a very bad design, from a "human factors" usability perspective, IMHO.

I would find it extremely annoying if a window popped up, when I was just tabbing through some fields ... =-O
