I do this too, but it is important that the purpose is clear to
subsequent coders, so the procedure must be named in such a way that it
is obvious.

For instance if I use:
If RecordIsValid(RecordKey);
I don't need to know what the procedure returns, I can see the intent.

In preference to:
If TestRecord(RecordKey);
I have to go look at TestRecord() to see what it returns and under what
circumstances in order to understand this decision.

Subject: Re: Define field as am indicator in D-specs

I sometimes write subprocedures which /return/ an indicator value rather

than using indicator fields.

For example:

If prSparePartsItem( ItemNumber );
prProcessSparePart( ItemNumber );
EndIf;

the prSparePartsItem subprocedure returns *ON if the item is spare
parts,
*OFF if not...

Why the true/false.
It's more like Java, but RPG isn't.
99% of RPG pgms use *on/*off.

It's not consistent, it adds nothing, and therefore it's just confusing.

wFlagOk = somecondition;

if wFlagOk;
doStuff();
else;
doOtherStuff();
endif;

You mean something like

D wFlagOk S N
D true S 1 inz('1')
D false S 1 inz('0')

OR

D wFlagOk S 1A
D true S 1 inz('1')
D false S 1 inz('0')

if (somecondition);
wFlagOk = true;

wFlagOk = false;

Is it possible to define a work field as an indicator so that the
field
can be set *on & *off in the calcs? Something like this?

D wFlagOK s ?

where "?" is the defining character for a true/false indicator?
