My main option is to encode these particular spaces - sed should do the 

trick with a little effort.

I don't understand the context for using sed for encoding. Manually encode XML element values? I generally envision generating XML from database row/column values. Or parsing XML and loading it into DB row/column values.

Sometimes I run into encoding issues related to the IBM i HTTP server, configuration options, content-type, and charset values embedded in HTTP Post data. Is that what you're afraid of?
