Personally I think simpler is better. I have seen cases where a programmer took your technique and decided to simply make the pointer reference the first field in the "RPG Buffer". Problem is RPG doesn't work like that and while it may work there is no guarantee.
Personally if that was all I wanted I would normally simply code a DS with the field names only listed (no length etc.) and then add the array definition at the end Overlay'd against the DS name.
