Brad, this one's for you:

if If MyCharVar In (fileA.field1,fileA.field2,fileB.field99);
MyFace = ': )';
Else;
MyFace = ':(';
Endif;

Because we "don't hardcode". :) We will chain to a file to see if it's a valid value instead of hardcoding an IN statement.

myvalue CHAIN myfile;

if (%found(myfile));
myface = HAPPY_FACE;
else;
myface = SAD_FACE;
endif;

Shoot, even though they're constants it's still hardcoding.. I'll have to create a face emotion master file of some sort!

Rather than having an "in" operator, you might consider an "in" procedure.
Write your own. Add it to a service program. Call it from anywhere.

if in(MyCharVar:'A,B,C');
MyFace = ': )';
Else;
MyFace = ':(';
Endif;

Ever wonder why there is no If IN (not to be confused with *IN) ?

If MyCharVar In ('A','B','C');
MyFace = ': )';
Else;
MyFace = ':(';
Endif;
