Problem with readc -- RPG400-L

I have a subfile which has an option f8 to clear the fields...when an f8 is
taken,am clearing the filelds and updating the subfile record format..after
clearing when an enter is taken, i want to update the file with blank
values. But since i havent changed anything on the subfile,the readc is not
reading any record from the subfile...pls help
