I perused the google :-)

Couldn't find one example of updating an XML file in RPG.

Lots of stuff on reading and writing new files, but NOTHING on updating.

In fact the IBM XML Toolkit stuff looks pretty obscure as well. Couldn't find any RPG samples, but admittedly stopped looking once I found the Java answer.

Have you done XML updates from RPG before ?

Kind of a moot point since I solved the problem, but looks like it's Java from now on for XML processing.
