The internal search function is temporarily non-functional. The current search engine is no longer viable and we are researching alternatives.

That was it. I knew the answer was going to be embarrassing. The thing is
I had written notes of what I wanted to have the SELECT statement to look
like, which did *not* include the extraneous comma. I even compared that to
the string created by the program and missed it!
