Yup, that's exactly how it works (and it works just as well for writing
as it does for reading), and since we have an alternate source of
meta-data (and given that it's a server program, and that it's the
client that needs that meta-data), it works really well, and it saved us
having to recompile the "family jewels" for every customer environment.
But now, I've been asked to research extending that so that (strictly on
a read-only basis, and only for certain files) we can tie directly into
"native system" data, rather than slaving fields in our files to those
in the native system's files.
