FWIW,
In my experience, when I got to where I was running out of indicators on
a record format it was usually a sign to me that I was trying to cram
too much onto one screen. More screens, but simpler screens, was
usually the right choice at that point. It also resulted in easier
end-user training.
But yes, indicators can be the same from format to format, with the
proviso that some usage pattern is useful to keep you from the dreaded
"unintended consequences" scenario.
