In case anyone else tries this, I discovered on "gotcha" is that if I use CCSID 1200, even "normal" characters are garbled in 5250 applications (e.g. DBU). Using CCSID 13488, everything above ASCII 255 is unreadable (which I would kind of expect), but
255 and below display fine.
So I think I'll stick with CCSID 13488 ....
