We don't have null capable fields, which is why we have never had a problem.
As for being faster, well how much do you really save?
But I do agree that *START is more descriptive.

Usually *LOVAL works the same as *START, but *LOVAL doesn't necessarily get you to the beginning of the file if you have null-capable fields.

As bonuses:
- *START is faster than *LOVAL
- *START is more descriptive than *LOVAL
