I'm with Jon on this one - I have a set of standard copybooks which contain
overlay templates for D, T and Z data-types, for use when trying to extract
information, e.g.:

DFN_Timestamp = %timestamp();
...
CurrDay = DFN_Timestamp.DD
CurrSec = DFN_Timestamp.SS

I know I should probably use the various %BIF's, but this seems so much
simpler. It's obviously only for 'extraction' purposes - I'm not using it
to add dates or calculate duration or anything like that.

This is one of those occasions where I'd be tempted to do a variation of
the "old" approach and probably bury it in a subproc. I love the date
functions but speed wise this is going to win every time.
