I think this isn't what Hans meant to say.

Yes, Java is not a scripting language, but it is not a compiled language.

Meaning, like PHP, Java has a runtime, which interpretes/compiles the code
at execution time (you knew that i know). It is not distributed as a BLOB.
Therefore, it has the advantages needed for applications. If you need raw
speed, use C. For application development, versatility is much more needed
than raw speed and access to the bare metal (you don't want that in an
application setting).

I'll be happy to make a prediction. PHP is on a steady decline, has
been for the last several years. Check TIOBE. You want steady work,
learn Java or C, or maybe C++. You want to be current, learn C# or
Objective-C. You want to be last year's news, learn PHP or better yet
Python. Scripting languages are sooooo 2006. :)
