Someone else, off-list, with a cruel and sadistic streak suggested that it
was because I was still on 5.1; i.e., that the SQL pre-processor had an
issue with free-format code at that release.

The real problem is that the precompiler does not support free
form. As a result, it inserts the SQLDA in the wrong place and
causes all sorts of erroneous errors. I have played with adding
dummy D-specs and C-specs in order to work around this problem.
Sometimes, I have been successful, but many times not. For now,
what I am doing is avoiding embedded SQL with free form until the
precompiler is improved. Latest rumour is V5R3.
