Still, a bulk of most problems are I/O. For example we had a process that
ran for over an hour in the morning. We also noticed it generated
thousands of journal transactions. Since we retain our journal entries
for 77 days this was a significant use of disk space. I rewrote the
person's program. Imagine a large transaction file with numerous
transactions per each item number. Now pretend you want to summarize that
by item number. You may:
loop through transaction file
chain summary by item number
if there add amount
if not write item and amount
repeat loop
But when I changed it to:
loop through transaction file sorted by item number
item number change?
write summary record
clear summary
add amount to summary
Repeat loop
Significantly cut down the writes. Significantly reduced the number of
journal transactions. Cut run time down to a few minutes.
