I routinely compare strings to a constant named EMPTY_STRING, which is
defined with a value of ''. It compares to true when the length of the
string is 0.

Just to be complete... It will also compare to true when the length of the string is 1000, if those 1000 bytes are all spaces.

It was established early on in this thread that the only sure way to test a varying string for emptiness, is to look at its length: if %len(myvar) > 0. Everything else is guesswork and theory.

Thanks to all,

I just misunderstood the comparison

the universe should not be seen as universe > big bang or universe < big
bang but
as universe (as we know it) <> big bang.

I missed the start of this thread, so perhaps this has already been
pointed out, but (given that Varlen is the same as a String) a string of
length 0 does equate to '', and '' is a value, whereas null is not.

I routinely compare strings to a constant named EMPTY_STRING, which is
defined with a value of ''. It compares to true when the length of the
string is 0.
