I missed the start of this thread, so perhaps this has already been
pointed out, but (given that Varlen is the same as a String) a string of
length 0 does equate to '', and '' is a value, whereas null is not.
I routinely compare strings to a constant named EMPTY_STRING, which is
defined with a value of ''. It compares to true when the length of the
string is 0.
