Agreed, but that wasn't what was being commented on. This was obviously a
response to updating only specific fields. You've already pointed out
adding fields is easier in SQL, and no one disputed it,

You are still locking the table format into the program. Add a new field
to
the table and your program crashes and you must recompile unless you turn
off format checking which is basically playing Russian roulette.

Well, that is one of the things you can do easily in RPG as well. Check
the
%FIELDS keyword of the UPDATE instruction. You can write:

UPDATE record %fields(field_1:field_2...:field_n) ;
