I've run some web services on the System i, but generally I try to keep these services on a middleware server. Currently I've got apache servers that make jdbc connections and/or consume a web service which is part of our ERP software that runs on i. The reason I prefer middleware servers is that hardware costs are relatively high for a System i. If you can use a cheap virtual or pc server to connect, you don't have to pay for that processing or memory profile on the more expensive hardware.

It seems to me that decisions like this come down to how critical it is that a particular service stays up, and if you have the resources to manage a disparate server architecture.

Subject: ....other than RPG & DB2

Is anyone using the iSeries for anything other than RPG & DB2 usage.
Meaning, are you using the standard DB2 with RPG(3,4,ILE)/SQL. Or do you have a different database usage, and/or do you use other languages?

My reason for asking is, we have developed a rather nice web package, primarily written in html/javascript, using servlets to make JDBC connections to call stored procedures(RPG). From time to time certain areas tend to 'be slow' or 'lage' in speed.
Nothing that some proper reviewing could find and fix. Anyway, we are about to do some hiring, and the higher ups are questioning if we should start looking at developers with other skill sets, thinking they know something that RPG-ers can't figure out.
Not wanting to leave the iSeries, but is questioning if there are better solutions.

So, I was just hoping to open a dialog, to discuss this.

Thanks
David
