Kevin:

The CHANGE indicator will be set to '1' (true) even if the user types over a single character with the same character ... so, in effect, no actual "data" has been "changed'...

The 5250 detects that something was changed, and the 5250 (hardware or emulator) does not compare the data in the field(s), but only knows if you typed something into any input-capable field(s).

So, you still might want to consider using some of those techniques mentioned.

Hope that helps,

Mark

Thanks everyone for the responses, I was going to try the D spec method. I
was hoping for a DDS keyword that might do the job and checked my DDS book
and found a keyword 'CHANGE(in)' that works on both fields and records. So
for a screen record I just setup the CHANGE(in) in the DDS and in the
program I use that indicator to determine if the screen was changed.

I do thank everyone for the ideas though!

Kevin,
When CVTRPGSRC (Convert RPG Source) is ran , that is what it does. It
converts the 'I' spec to 'D' specs.
I you have a RPG program, run it though the conertion program and take a
look at the RPGIV program
it creates. That will give you some ideals and examples.

In my /36 days, in the 'I' specs I could set up one field that

Is there anyway to do something similar with DDS and RPGIV? I am still
somewhat new to DDS and RPGIV, so I am still learning all the new
features.

You could build a DS in D-specs, that would map a single field into some or
all of the fields on the screen, in whatever order you care to put them in.
