EVAL is a late addition to RPG - it was never a part of RPG III. It was added as an op-code that let you put free-form expressions in an expanded factor 2. EVALR came a little later, to provide what MOVE used to do, vs. MOVEL.

So we used to have to use Z-ADD to set a variable to a value.

I've always wondered, what is the purpose of Z-ADD? Isn't it just the
same to EVAL = 0, or EVAL = whatever you really want it to be? Or is
this just a legacy leftover that only still exists in order to mess with
my mind?

Thanks! :)

Luke,

In case it hasn't been mentioned (or it has and I missed it), when pumping
numeric values from one variable to another -of a larger length than the
originating variable- if it wasn't 'initialized' via z-add0 prior to the
MOVE it resulted in an execution error with invalid data in a numeric field.

Ah, the bad old days...
