Our friend Simon used to point out that creating literals this way was a
no-no because the apostrophe (or other character) would have a different
representation in a different CCSID. Particularly nasty for
multi-nationals, I would think. David (the OP) is in France so x'7D' might
be something else entirely.

Another nice trick is to use a variable for the single quote, then you
won't have to go back and replace anything.

Put a ^ where you want the apostrophe to be. Then after building the
variable use a replace command to replace the ^ with double quotes.

Ifs makes it easier to read.
