Paul, drop the DS, and you will be happy and less confused. Compile a skeleton program that references you file with VARLEN(), and take a look at the generated spooled compiler listing. Note the definition of MYCOL (as we have come to call it).

Is the following a true statement For the MOVE command to work with
variable length fields then the DS technique must be used.
