1) Why would you bother to be looking passed the assigned length?
There's no guarantee as to what the rest of the field will contain.
2) Why are you using a DS overlay to handle variable length external
fields instead of using RPGIV's native support of them?

Why do I have 5O+ blanks between the end of the data and the first null
