VARLEN question

I have a file with a zone defined as 9000 VARLEN(100)



In the programme I set this varying length field as follows

In ZPMESS I have 'TEST MESSAGE'



Aftre the file write I have

Why do I have 5O+ blanks between the end of the data and the first null
(in yellow)
