Indeed, pointers in user-allocated memory are always retained, as far as I
know, even through multiple reallocations. If that weren't the case, all my
apps would fail...

Have you had experience of this happening Pete? I was under the impression
that the move of the storage was done pointer-safe to avoid this
possibility.
