"Why not have a cleanup program for each service program so that if it ends
in error you won't have any junk laying around. What exactly were you
pointing to that you got a pointer crash?"

The pointer in question is maintained by IBM internally.

To reproduce this behavior write a simple program that calls a simple
service program. Run the program in the say QILE activation group and the
service program in the say QSRVPGM named activation. Have the service
program signal an error. The program catches the error and then calls the
service program again. When you try to call the service program you get an
invalid pointer error.

Why it does this I do not understand. Apparently if a service program is
loaded in a separate named activation group it gets a different address than
if it is loaded into the same activation group? I don't know. I just know
that the program blows up with an invalid pointer error.

Again, my question is why destroy the activation group at all?
