The conversion isn't something that I can avoid. There has to be a
conversion somewhere along the way since the data structure variable is
being used in a procedure call later on. If I make it packed then the
procedure call gives an error because I'm trying to pass a packed field to
a zoned field. So, six of one, half dozen of another I guess.

Bryce,

I don't think It 'solved' anything, it just moved it to a different
location. True you don't see the messages anymore but casting your fields
in the select just forces a data conversion during the select. In the end
the data is still being converted. If you want to avoid the conversion
try defining the target fields as packed.
