I guess I am just plain thick. This is the only reference that I can find.

From the V5R4 manual:
{EVAL{(HMR)}} result = expression
{EVAL{(HMR)}} result += expression
{EVAL{(HMR)}} result -= expression
{EVAL{(HMR)}} result *= expression
{EVAL{(HMR)}} result /= expression
{EVAL{(HMR)}} result **= expression

This isn't important because I can't imagine many business operations that raise a value by powers, but it was a test question and it befuddled me and I wanted to read the text.

I believe you but I haven't been able to find any reference to ** in the
RPGLE manual for V5R4.

The ILE RPG reference manual has a good discussion on operators. I'm
just
sayin'...

C eval result = 2 + (3 **4)

what is the value of result? (I have never seen ** in an eval
statement
before and can't find it mentioned in the reference manual.)
