But theory breaks down when you have to debug a Plex/2E generated program.

From my understanding, at least 2E names can be followed...

Plex names on the other hand are a different matter...if it wasn't for
the inclusion of the Action Diagram statements as comments, Plex
generated programs would be undebuggable on the i. The same is not
true for Java/.Net/C++...

So, no, neither 2E nor Plex needs long names. 2E still uses 6-character
field names.

Of course, this isn't a problem, since no-one ever looks at generated code
(nor should they need to).
