I am trimming all leading and trailing blanks, just to make sure that there are none there.

Along the same lines, trailing blanks prior to the null terminator (in addition to imbedded blanks) can cause this problem. Or trailing blanks in the actual path, but not in the API parameter (which would be a tad difficult to "see" when viewing the directory).
